Fitted Sheets for a “Qouble”

By Mitch, October 3, 2008 8:39 am

For the most part LofaBed mattresses are of standard dimensions (54″x75″ for a full/double, 60″x80″ for a queen), but we DO offer two sizes (28″x75″ chair/ottoman + the 54″x80″ “qouble”) that fall outside the standard bedding parameters. Customers ask all the time for advice finding fitted sheets in these sizes, but until recently, I couldn’t help them. Then someone told me about the Precious Bedding site. Although I don’t know them and, therefore, cannot really recommend them, they DO offer bedding in virtually every size you can think of and some interesting buying tips that I think are worth sharing.

So here’s their website information for your perusal, and if you DO decide to buy something from them, I’d appreciate some feedback re the experience.

It’s a fact that your bed gets more use in your home than any other home furniture. Therefore, it’s crucial to know the bedding basics prior to making your next purchase. “Bedding 101″, a crash course, has been compiled in our Linen Learning Center. This will help you to know exactly what you are looking for and why. It is usually located on the bottom-left of each page on the site. Sample bedding set.

It can be quite confusing to find linens for many of these bed sizes, specifically Olympic Queen and California King Sheets. It’s important to be aware that our catalog changes constantly. We advise that you check back with the Precious Bedding Company if you can’t find what you’re looking for at the moment. In the near future, more dust ruffles, featherbeds and down products will be added to our inventory. We are enthusiastic about acquiring more great Pima (Supima) cotton products as well.

If you need anything, we are here to assist you. There is a “Live Chat” option on the left on each page. If we happen not to be in, you can always reach one of our customer service representatives either at the “Contact Us” link at the top or by sending an email to:support@preciousbedding.com.

We’re dedicated to providing prompt answers to all your bedding questions.

Bed Sheet Buying Tips

1. Higher thread count bed sheets are usually softer, but aren’t always the best. If you like a cooler, lighter sheet then shop in the 200 to 500 range. If you’re looking for the ultimate in bedding softness, opt for a sateen weave.

2. If you’re buying Olympic Queen sheets, consider buying just an Olympic Queen fitted sheet to save money if you already have a Queen sheet set.

3. The above also goes for California King sheets too. You may only have to buy aCalifornia King fitted sheet if you already have a King bedding set.

4. The type of cotton matters. Only look for Pima and Egyptian cotton as these are the best long-staple cottons.

5. Some sheet makers take shortcuts by only putting elastic on the top and bottom edge of the fitted sheet. Make sure the elastic goes all the way around the bottom edge, especially if you have a pillowtop.

6. Be wary of merchants who don’t list the ply of their bed sheets. Having high plys is another way mills can take shortcuts to advertise their sheets as a higher thread count than they really are.

7. Not all blues are blue and not all reds are red. It’s important to check with the supplier if you’re wondering whether the color of one piece of bedding will match another.

8. Pure cotton sheets will be the softest and most breathable, and the natural cotton fibers will pull moisture (sweat) away from your body. Polycotton blends are more wrinkle resistant and moderately priced.

9. When selecting your sheets, consider buying at least one solid color sheet set to coordinate with your print bedding and other accessories.

10. Be sure to keep the thickness of your mattress in mind. Mattresses over 16 inches tall will require a “extra deep” sheet set.

Sofa Bed Replacement Mattresses

By Mitch, October 2, 2008 1:35 pm

About once a week someone writes to inquire about replacing an old Hide-A-Bed mattress with a new one. Normally I tell them to keep searching the internet, because shipping only a thin mattress from Canada would be prohibitively expensive. But recently l came across a website that specializes in such mattresses, and I thought sharing this information in my blog could be helpful. The following text was written by a company in Chicago called Factory Direct Mattresses:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY

Forget about springs. Think about what happens to the springs when you fold up the sofa bed. Only the poorest quality sofabed mattresses are made from springs. The only practical material is urethane foam.

Foam comes in two types: standard, and memory foam. Memory foam is good for regular beds, but not for sofabeds. The last thing you want is anything that conforms to the bar. Standard foam quality is measured by foam density. High density foams have smaller pores and it requires a little more material to make up the “spaces” between the pores. Consequently, the better mattresses weigh a little more than the others. Of course the more the mattress weighs, the more urethane goes into it, and the more it costs.

The very best sofa bed mattresses are made from 2.5 lbs per cubic foot density foam. Mattresses made from 1.8 lbs per cubic foot density foam are also considered good. Anything less is low quality, which will deform over time, and will not give a good nights sleep.

Thickness is also a very important factor. The “rise” is the height of the sofabed, ( not including seat cushions). All sofa beds fold up into three layers. Therefore the “rise” is something over three times the mattress thickness. Manufacturers of sofa beds us mechanisms in two rises; 12″ and 15″. This means that a sofabed with a 4″ thick mattress will have a rise of something over 12 inches, and will make a comfortable sofa. If the mattress is 5 inches thick, the rise will be something over 15 inches. A 15″ rise makes a much less comfortable sofa, but a more comfortable bed. What this means to us is that if your sofa bed frame is designed for a 4″ thick mattress, that is what you must buy. If your sofabed is designed to accommodate a 5″ thick mattress, you have a choice. The 4″ will work well, and cost much less, but the 5″ will give you a better mattress. If you can fit a 5″, you should spend the extra dollars. Whatever you do, don’t try to put a 5″ mattress in a 4″ frame. It will crush the mattress. Also, over time, it will also ruin the frame by slowly elongating the rivet holes and wearing the rivets. It will also be a killer to fold up the bed.

Surprisingly, there is no standard sizes in sofabeds. There are a few sizes which are considered “common.” They are: 54 x 72 & 60 x72. Nevertheless, most sofa beds are not that exact size. Here in the USA, there are only two mattress companies which make up any size sleeper sofa mattress for the same price as the common sizes. Both of them make mattresses of the 2.5 lbs per cubic foot density which I recommend.

Unfortunately, neither one makes both thick nesses.

Replacement sofa bed mattress company uses 4″ foam.

sofa bed mattress company uses 5″ foam.

Murphy’s Law, in Reverse

By Mitch, September 24, 2008 2:19 pm

A funny thing happened today, and it’s never happened before. I told this customer in North Dakota that her LofaBed had been picked up by the shipping company, DuCamPro, last Thursday. As per usual, I had called DuCamPro’s dispatch on Monday morning to try and get a “read” on when the next truck to North Dakota would be leaving. Dispatch told me there was a run leaving for Seattle in early October, and that my order would be part of that run. So I told my customer, who was quite satisfied.

Then today I get an email from said customer, telling me her LofaBed had just been home delivered…..THIS MORNING!!! Not October. Not even the end of September. But today, this morning! I called DuCamPro to ask them how this could have happened without the knowledge of the dispatcher, and they blamed it on miscommunication. I say it’s Murphy’s Law, in reverse, and I’m damn happy to know that it exists.
